The Others (***)
review by Ken Gumbs

There is nothing better than expecting a bad movie and getting a good one. The Others is a sleeper film, in that I mean I thought it was going to make me fall asleep; an occurrence that is not so uncommon with many so called “scary” movies.

Nicole Kidman plays a wealthy English housewife of three children and a husband who is off fighting the Germans during W.W.II. The setting is a large dark manor that is closed off from light to protect Kidman’s
photosensitive children.

Nicole Kidman gives a performance that rivals her work in Moulin Rouge. The decor of this film is dark cold and empty, something pulled right from a Tim Burton film. Like many of today’s scary movies, The Others has a big surprise ending. Of course after you watch it, you will be slapping your head saying “I should have known it.”

The Others was a surprisingly entertaining film in a genre that has not been very entertaining as of late.
I recommend it.
