Amelie (****)
review by Ken Gumbs

The Amelie bandwagon has come and gone, but forgive me for my procrastination. Rarely do you see a film with the freshness and technical mastery of Amelie. In this humble reviewer's opinion, this is the best film of 2001 (sorry Wes
Anderson, I loved The RoyalTenebaums, also).

Amelie is a French waitress who finds a new hobby as a do-gooder. This delightful and fun story follows Ameile as she falls in love and tries to uncover the mystery of a discovered photo album. The great thing about Ameile is that the film can be looked at as simple entertainment or more closely examined for its cinematic achievements.

Technically speaking, Amelie is brilliant. I only hope Hollywood directors like George Lucas get to see this film, simply to remind them that technical brilliance can work within a good storyline, instead of technical brilliance somehow forming the storyline.

I urge you to go see Amelie. Go see it a few times, buy the dvd, rent it, download it, email me and I’ll transcribe it for you.
Whatever it takes, see Amelie.
