Mark Cuban Still Creeps Me Out
Cuban and Wagner Tap Soderbergh to Direct Six HD Movies; Simultaneous Release Planned
I like Steven Soderbergh. A lot. I think he's a cool filmmaker. Mark Cuban on the other hand is kind of a creepy dude with lots of money and a burning desire to be involved with film. He's the scariest kind of guy, because while I'm creeped out by him, I think he might actually be on to something, and I am curious to see how it turns out. People who pose for photos with a wad of money hanging out of their pocket generally have bad judgement, which leads me to believe that anything this guy does is bound to suck. But people who hire Soderbergh to direct movies generally have good judgement, so he can't be all bad. Maybe it's the partner, Todd Wagner, who has the good judgement, and Cuban is the guy who is going to bring it all crashing down.
Here's Mark Cuban's blog. You decide if he's going to destroy movies or not.

I was just about to post about the same thing. Although I only read a blurb and didn't know Mark Cuban was involved. I don't trust the guy. He can't make the Mavericks any better. He draws too much attention to himself for no good reason. And did you see The Benefactor?!?!?! I only watched it in the background waiting for monday night football to come on and he would choose people not based on their intelligence or their abilities, but rather simply on whether or not he liked their personality. It was dumb.
This whole concept of simultaneous releases is dumb too. That's not going to help them recoup costs faster, like their hoping. It'll lower the revenue. I guarantee it. Why would most people go to the theater to see a movie when on the same day they could just go watch it on cable or rent it at Hollywood Video? They are wasting all that money to put the movie (most likely shot on digital video -- ugh) onto 35mm prints that no one will see.
I think the summer blockbusters have the best solution by releasing the movie on the same day worldwide. That'll curb piracy (especially the foreign black markets, which can drastically hurt the studios overseas) and they'll have more money coming in right away.
It's fine to prep a DVD for a DVD release shortly after it's theatrical run. The fresher the movie is in people's minds, the better. But a simultaneous release spells disaster. People will assume the movie sucks because it's straight to video (even if it's on the big screen). National Lampoon tried it with Black Ball or whatever the movie was called. It's probably a bad example, but that turned out horribly.
Soderbergh needs to get away from the gimmicks and go back to making art.
